Moles: As the cooler and wetter weather draws ever closer, the gardeners nightmare makes their return! Moles can turn your lawn and garden areas into an unsightly mess in next to no time. You can go to bed one evening and wake up the next morning with a miniature mountain range on your lawn! Moles cause damage to plants roots and turf by excavating the soil away and causing shallow collapses in the ground. This is why keeping moles under control is essential in paddocks with livestock in, especially horses.
.Rodents: Colder and wetter weather can push rodents towards buildings in search for warmth and food sources. Common places for them to burrow are under or around garden sheds and compost bins. If you have bird feeders out in the winter this will often draw rodents in as they have access to any spilled bird feeds. Farms are nearly always under attack from rats and mice this time of year where they steal cattle feed and can set up residence in hay or straw storage areas. We carry out a lot of baiting, trapping and night shoots through the autumn and winter to keep numbers as low as possible. If you think you see signs of rodents, don’t leave them and hope they will move on. They will multiply rapidly and will be harder to deal with and cause more damage as there numbers increase. Not to mention the increased risk of diseases they can spread, such as Weil’s disease, Salmonella, Tuberculosis, E.Coli.
